Vapour blasting vs sandblasting

A practical guide for owners, restorers and workshops deciding how to clean aluminium, classic and precision metal components without unnecessary damage.

The practical difference

Vapour blasting uses water, fine abrasive media and compressed air. The water cushions the process, helps control dust and gives a smoother, more consistent finish than many dry blasting methods on suitable metal parts.

  • Often preferred for aluminium castings and restoration parts
  • Reduced risk of harsh dry-media impact
  • Clean satin, factory-fresh finish when the part is suitable
  • Suitability still depends on condition, material and prep needs

When dry blasting can be the wrong tool

Dry sandblasting can be useful in the right setting, but on precision, aluminium or delicate restoration components it can be too aggressive. The risk is surface damage, media embedding, distortion or a rougher finish than the owner wants.

VMC’s quote process is designed to avoid assumptions: send photos first and Charlie will confirm whether vapour blasting is the right route.

Best parts for VMC to assess

  • Engine cases, gearbox casings and crankcases
  • Carburettors, cylinder heads and manifolds
  • Brake calipers and aluminium brackets
  • Classic motorcycle and classic car components
  • Marine heat exchangers and suitable industrial parts

What to send for a quote

Send clear photos before posting or dropping parts off. Include the full component, close-ups of corrosion, paint, sealing faces, threads and any areas that may need masking.

  • Part type and approximate size
  • Material if known
  • Current condition and finish wanted
  • Drop-off, courier or return shipping preference
Questions

Before you send parts

Photos are the fastest way for VMC to confirm suitability, price and turnaround.

Is vapour blasting better than sandblasting?

For many aluminium and precision restoration parts, vapour blasting is gentler and gives a controlled satin finish. Dry blasting may be too aggressive for delicate castings.

Will vapour blasting remove paint?

It can help remove coatings on suitable metal parts, but paint type, thickness and condition affect prep time. Photos are needed for a firm quote.

What parts should I send photos of?

Send the full part, close-ups of corrosion or paint, any sealing faces, threads, bearings or areas needing masking.
